Disease Management Programme: BVMed: Chronic wounds "must be addressed in DMP"

Berlin. More attention must be paid to the treatment of open wounds in German government's disease management programm (DMP) for diabetes mellitus type 2, says the German Medical Technology Industry Association, BVMed.

The statement comes in response to the ministry of health's legislation on pre-requisites necessary to set up structured treatment programms for the disease, published last month.

BVMed estimates that the treatment of chronic wounds amounts to 25 % of overall diabetes treatment costs. Some 4 million patients suffer from chronic wounds in Germany, and approximately 1 million of them are diabetics.
